Abstract

A friction lining material comprises a silica aerogel, an inorganic fibrous material, preferably asbestos, and a binder capable of withstanding high temperatures. The silica aerogel may be produced as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,093,454 or by adding a stable silica sol produced according to U.S.A. Specification 2,285,449 or U.S.A. Specification 2,356,773, if desired after dilution with water or a solvent such as alcohol or ethyl "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark), or after admixture with a liquid binder, to the solid ingredients of the friction lining material. If desired the liquid may be sprayed on to the solids but mixing is preferred. The sol used may be one with a specially increased silica content. Suitable binders are natural or synthetic resins, e.g. phenol-formaldehyde or phenol-furfural resins, rubber or an oxidized oil, e.g. oxidized linseed oil. Other fillers which may be incorporated are cardolite (a phenolic resin reacted to infusibility), litharge, barytes and/or whiting. In one example asbestos, silica aerogel and cardolite are mixed. Solid phenol-formaldehyde resin may then be added and the products moulded, or a liquid resin may be used and the mixture extruded, cut to size and cured.ALSO:A friction lining material comprises a silica aerogel, an inorganic fibrous material, preferably asbestos, and a binder capable of withstanding high temperatures.
