Abstract
776,358. Heat treating steel. METALLURGICAL OXYGEN PROCESSES, Ltd. May 17, 1955 [May 18, 1954], No 14591/54 Class 72 [Also in Group XII] Steel is reheated in a continuous furnace 11 in which fluid fuel introduced at F is burnt to incomplete combustion with a gas containing at least 50 per cent oxygen introduced at O, and some of the combustion products are withdrawn at 16 and utilized in three different ways. Some of the partially burnt gas is introduced through ports 17 into a muffle section 12, where combustion is completed by air or oxygenated gas supplied at A thereby preheating the metal charge 10. Another portion of the gas may be introduced into the stock 15.to assist in heating the recuperators 14 in which the fuel or combustion - supporting gas is preheated. Finally, a further portion of the gas passed through a cooler 13, dried if necessary, and introduced into the preheating section at 18 as protective atmosphere for the furnace charge. Specifications 637,337, 646,691 and 697,734 are referred to.
