Abstract

775,660. Bolts &c. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 23, 1954 [July 27, 1953], No. 20775/53. Class 89 (1). A bolt or stud capable of being stressed at a temperature at which creep may occur, has its cross-sectional area over a part of its length in. creased, whereby substantially to confine the plastic-strain occurring in the bolt &c. to the part or parts of smaller cross-sectional area. In one arrangement a stud of effective length M with screwed parts C, D is stressed to secure together flanges E, F. The reduced parts A, B, each of length N/2 and cross-sectional area a, are symmetrical about the increased part L, which has a cross-sectional area b. The nuts G, each of length n/2, engage parts C, D and act on areas c of the flanges. These symbols are combined in the formula where f is a fraction of the plastic strain utilized for elastic strain and stress relief in parts A, B; k is a numerical fraction taking account of the reduction in stress from end to end of the nut; p, q and r are small fractions which define small proportions of plastic strain which occur in length L, the flanges, and the nut and screw-thread respectively.
