Abstract

The invention comprises aminophenoxyalkanes of the formula <FORM:0775478/IV(b)/1> wherein the groups -NR1R2 and -NR3R4 are different, R1, R2, R3 and R4 being hydrogen or alkyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or alkyl groups having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms and carrying at least one hydroxyl group on a carbon atom or carbon atoms other than that adjacent to the nitrogen atom and n is an integer from 3 to 10, and acid addition salts thereof. The compounds are made by treating a compound of the formula <FORM:0775478/IV(b)/2> wherein W is a group -NR1R2 or a group convertible thereto and Z is a group convertible to the group -NR3R4 to effect the desired conversion. Examples of groups convertible to amino groups are nitro (by reduction), acyl amino and acylalkylamino (by hydrolysis or reduction of the acyl group), alkoxycarbonamido and alkoxycarbonalkylamido (by hydrolysis) and nitrosoalkylamino (by reductive removal of the nitroso group). Examples describe the preparation of the a -(p-aminophenoxy)-o -(p-methylaminophenoxy) derivatives of pentane, hexane and heptane; the a -(p-aminophenoxy)-o - (p - dimethylaminophenoxy) derivatives of pentane, hexane, heptane and octane; 1-(p-aminophenoxy) - 6 - (p - di - b - hydroxyethyl-aminophenoxy) - hexane; 1 - (p - aminophenoxy) - 6 - (p - di - b - hydroxypropylaminophenoxy) hexane; 1-(p-ethylaminophenoxy)-6-(p-methylaminophenoxy) hexane; 1-(p-dimethyl-aminophenoxy) - 6 - (p - methylaminophenoxy) hexane and 1-(p-dimethylaminophenoxy)-7-(p-methylaminophenoxy)-heptane. Starting materials. 1-(p-Acetamidophenoxy-7-(p-acetmethylamidophenoxy) heptane and 1-(p-acetethylamidophenoxy) - 6 - (p - acetmethylamido-phenoxy) hexane are made by reaction of 7-p-acetamidophenoxy-heptyl bromide and 6-(p-acetmethylamidophenoxy) hexyl bromide respectively with the appropriate p-substituted phenol.
