Abstract

The invention comprises amines of the general formula: <FORM:0873780/IV (b)/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a C1-C4 straight or branched chain alkyl group, R1 is a C1-C3 alkyl group and R11 is a C1-C3 alkyl group which may be substituted by hydroxyl groups, their acid addition salts, and the preparation thereof by reacting an amine of the formula R.CH2.C(CH3)2.NH2 with a reactive hydrochloric acid ester or an alkyl or aryl sulphonic acid ester of an alcohol of the formula R1.CH(OH).R11. The compounds may also be prepared by reacting a Schiff's base of the formula R.CH2.C(CH3)2.N:CH.R1 or R.CH2.C(CH3)2.N:CHR11 with an appropriate Grignard compound and hydrolysing the product, or by catalytically reducing 1,1-dialkyl-N-alkylene imines of the general formula <FORM:0873780/IV (b)/2> In particular, N-t-butyl-2-aminopropanol is prepared by reducing alpha-(N-t-butylamino)-propionic acid ethyl ester, in turn prepared by reacting t-butylamine with alpha-bromopropionic acid ethyl ester. p-Toluene sulphonic acid-3-pentyl ester and the -2-(4-methyl-pentyl) ester were prepared by reacting pentane-3-ol and 4-methylpentane-2-ol respectively with p-toluenesulphonyl chloride in pyridine.
