Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0827832/IV (b)/1> (wherein R1, R2 and R3 are either hydrogen atoms or C1-4 alkyl groups, at least one but not more than two of these radicals being alkyl groups, R4 is a C1-4 alkyl group and R5 is hydrogen or a C1-4 alkyl group), including their geometrical and optical isomers and mixtures and racemates thereof, and acid-addition salts thereof and quaternary ammonium compounds derived therefrom; and their preparation by alkylation, by known methods, of the corresponding compounds containing a primary amino group. For example, the secondary amines may be prepared either by quaternization and subsequent decomposition of the corresponding benzylidene derivatives or by treatment with a reactive alkyl ester in the presence of an acid-binding agent, and the tertiary amines may be prepared by the second of these methods employing a correspondingly greater amount of the reactive alkyl ester. Alternatively for the preparation of the dimethylamino compound, formic acid and formaldehyde may be employed. Examples describe the preparation of 5 : 6-dimethyl-6-methylamino-, 6 - methyl - 6 - methylamino-, 6 - ethyl-6 - methylamino-, 5 : 5 - dimethyl - 6 - methylamino- and 5 : 6 - dimethyl - 6 - dimethylamino-bicyclo-(2 : 2 : 1)-heptanes as hydriodides or hydrochlorides.
