Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0979562/C1/1> (in which R and R1 each represents a C1- 3 alkyl group, at least one representing a methyl group, R2 represents a C1- 3 alkyl group or a phenyl group, R3 and R4 are the same or different and each represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or a C1- 3 alkyl or C1- 3 alkoxy group, and R5 and R6 are the same or different and each represents a C1- 3 alkyl group or R5, R6 and the nitrogen atom together represent a saturated heterocyclic ring) and non-toxic acid addition salts thereof, their preparation by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:0979562/C1/2> with an appropriate esterifying agent, optionally followed by acid addition salt formation, and pharmaceutical preparations containing them. The alcohol starting materials are prepared by reacting a ketone of the formula <FORM:0979562/C1/3> with RMgHalogen, followed by hydrolysis of the product. The compounds of the invention are local anaesthetics and may be administered topically, parenterally or rectally in the form of pharmaceutical preparations (e.g. ointments, lotions, creams, gels, powders, solutions and suppositories) containing them in association with a carrier or excipient.
