775,124. Stuffing boxes. FONDAZIONE E. PATERNO, PALADINO, S., and UGOLINI, F. Sept. 2, 1954, No. 25518/54. Class 122 (5). A sealing device for a shaft 9 rotatable in a vessel 19 containing a liquid to be treated comprises two end portions one of which seals the shaft in a zone contained in the vessel while the other seals the shaft in a zone outside the vessel, and an intermediate portion embodying a chamber 18 in which a gas under pressure may be circulated or leakage liquid from the vessel may be collected. Each end portion comprises a number of sealing rings 6 mounted in a cup-shaped member 7 screw-threaded into a. part 4. Pressure is applied to the rings 6 by spring-loaded caps 12 and by screw-threaded caps 2 provided with lock-nuts 3. The chamber 18 is in communication with a gas circuit by means of a hole 14 and has a plug 15 to enable leakage liquid to be removed. If the pressure in the chamber 18 is higher than that in the vessel 19 the liquid in the latter is prevented from coming into contact with the rings 6 by the pressure in a box 20. The shaft 9 is mounted in a bearing 10 adjacent to a chamber 11 connected to a grease cup 17 and may carry a stirring or aerating device for the liquid in the vessel which may be an autoclave or fermentation vessel for bacterial cultures.
