Abstract

774,249. Gas-liquid contact apparatus. DIAMOND ALKALI CO. June 20, 1955 [June 21, 1954], No. 17784/55. Class 55 (2). Gas-liquid contact apparatus comprises a tube 2 for the supply of gas, a tube 4 surrounding the same for the supply of liquid and an outer casing 6 having a suction branch 14, the liquid outlet between the tubes 2, 4 being so designed that the liquid issues as a substantially unbroken tubular sheet which encloses the gas, the expansion of which moves the sheet radially outwards towards, and eventually into contact with, the casing 6 where the sheet is disrupted. The gas washed, and deprived of solids by the liquid contact, flows backwards to the exhaust 14. The tube 4 is tapered at the end to form a narrow passageway with the knife-edge 18 formed by flaring the tube 2. , The tube 2 is lined at the end with liquid-repellent material 22. In modifications, the tube 2 is not flared, but projects somewhat from the tube 4 and carries an outwardly flared sleeve which diverts the liquid sheet outwardly towards the casing 6.
