A rand cutting attachment for use in a machine for severing rands to the marginal portions of shoe uppers, has a rand detecting feeler device 37, a knife 3 associated therewith, means to move the device along the marginal portions of the upper into contact with the leading edge of the rand already attached to the shoe, and means to cause the knife to sever the rand in a locality determined by this position of the detecting device. The knife 3 is slidable in a housing 2 which is adjustable on carrier arm 5 pivoted at 15 in bracket 20 pivoted on shaft 1, has on opening 8 through which the rand passes in its approach to the needle, and provides a shearing edge 9 for the knife. The upper face of the rand lies against a pin 10, and springs 14 hold the rand in position for cutting and support the severed end. The feeler device comprises an upper rod 35 with a roll 36, and a lower feeler rod 37 with a turned and bevelled end 38 for engaging the bevelled end of the rand. Rods 35, 37 are adjustable lengthwise in blocks 39, 40 hinged together on a stud 43 on arm 44 secured to arm 5. The feelers are normally held apart, clear of the shoe, by spring 61. In operation the machine is stopped after the rand has been almost completely attached, e.g. as in Fig. 1, and knob 64 is twisted anticlockwise about 90 degrees so that shaft 46 is turned and, by engagement of pin 48 in spiral groove 47, moved lengthwise, and this movement is transmitted through cable B to close the feelers on the work. The knob, held in this position is moved to the right to swing lever 25 and bracket 20 so that the feeler device and severing mechanism move along the shoe margin until the bevelled face of feeler 38 engages the leading end of the rand. This movement of lever 25 is transmitted yieldingly through spring 28 to prevent distortion of the end of the rand, and if desired lever 25 may be moved to and fro, about the pivot provided by balls 21, to ensure that the feeler is engaging the rand. Lever 25 is then swung downwardly about stud 24, and through cable A causes the knife 3 to sever the rand at a point, determined by feeler 38, such that the ends of the rand will abut neatly.
