Abstract

981,401. Attaching ribs to insoles. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. May 10, 1961 [May 12, 1960], No. 16914/61. Heading A3B. A machine comprises means for feeding and attaching a ribbed strip S to the margin of an insole I, said means 32 pressing the strip at successive points against the insole and a mechanism, which under the control of a control member 250 movable by operator actuated means into a position resting on the rib, acts to stop said feeding and attaching means 32 automatically by movement of the control member off the rib. A hand lever 212 connected to an edge gauge 160 by a series of pivoted members 186 positions the gauge 160 to shift the insole relative to the attaching and feeding member 32 to vary the distance of the strip inwardly of the insole edge. The control member to stop the feeding and attaching operation consists of a finger 252 normally held in parallel relationship with a second finger 250, the finger 252 carrying a switch 308 held open by the finger 250 when parallel therewith. During the operation, starting at the heel breast line, the fingers are held just above the upper surface of the insole inward of the rib. When the operation reaches the ball position at the first side of the insole the hand lever 312 is moving about a vertical axis 198 to move the edge gauge 160 so that the strip is attached close to the edge of the insole I. The lever 212 is swung a second time when the operation reaches the tip of the insole so that the strip is attached further in from the edge and a third time at the ball line on the opposite side of the insole to attach the ribbed strip close to the edge. To swing the lever 212 back to its initial position i.e. the third swing, it must be depressed at the same time so that a latch 214 provided on the lever 212 can be disengaged from a recess 232 formed in a bearing sleeve 224 provided about the axis 198, thereby disengaging a microswitch 300 carried by the lever 212 from a stop 304 carried by a collar 208 to which the lever is pivoted for heightwise movement, to energize a solenoid, the plunger 288 of which is connected to the finger 250 by a wire 280. The plunger 288 moves downward so that both fingers move into a position on the rib at the side of the insole I to which the rib was first attached. During the remainder of the operation the fingers ride on the rib until one finger 250 drops off the end whereupon the switch 308 is closed and energizes a solenoid 314 which is connected to the upper end 74 of a two part treadle rod 74, 76 to disconnect the treadle and disengage a clutch which controls the insole and strip feeding mechanism and at the same time a severing knife is automatically operated to sever the strip. The machine is provided with an adjustable heel gauge 102, which is connected to the treadle, depression of which starts an attaching operation and moves the heel gauge to an out-of-the-way position. Specifications 558,641, 651,635, 707,899 and 936,795 are referred to.
