Abstract
610,758. Boot - making machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). April 16, 1946, No. 11607. [Class 17 (i)] In a machine for rounding shoe soles, such as the channelling and rounding machine described in Specification 13301/10, [Class 17(i)], comprising a crease guide and a forepart guide which alternately occupy an operative position in engagement respectively with the crease or the upper so as to control the width of the margin of the trimmed sole, means are provided for holding the crease guide positively in operative position until the forepart guide has at least substantially reached its operative position to take control of the position of the sole. The machine described is generally similar to that described in Specification 13301/10. The crease guide 50 is carried by a lever 48 pivoted at 46 and biassed upwardly by a spring 60. The forepart guide 24 is carried by a bell crank lever 22 biassed upwardly about its pivot 18 by a spring 30 and adapted to be rocked to lower the guide 24 by a treadle rod 42. A slide 65 biassed rearwardly by a spring 80 and constrained to move in a horizontal path by a stud 74 engaging an arcuate slot 76 in a bracket depending from the bell crank lever 40 which interconnects the rod 42 and lever 22, has a parallel-sided end adapted to lie between a roll 62 concentric with the pivot 18 and the curved upper edge of a plate 56 adjustable on the lever 48. The slide is latched in the position shown by a latch 82. The figure shows the position of the parts while the shank portion of the sole is being trimmed and the shoe is under the control of the crease guide. Depression of the treadle rod when the ball line is approached lowers the forepart guide until it is about to engage the shoe upper. At this point, a screw 88 carried from the lever 40 trips the latch 82, so that the slide 65 is withdrawn by its spring and the guide 50 is raised from the crease by its spring 60 until a plate 68 on the guide engages a screw 66 adjustable on the guide 24. When the treadle rod is released, the forepart guide is raised by the spring 30 and the crease guide is lowered by the end of the slot 76 engaging the stud 74 to force the slide between the roll 62 and plate 56.
