Abstract
878,316. Boot making machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd., SIMS, E. H, and LE VESCONTE, I. J. R. Jan. 24, 1958 [Jan. 25, 1957], No. 2872/57. Class 17(1) A machine for trimming a shoe button member on a last has a trimming cutter 60 mounted on a rotary horizontal shaft, and a jack to support the work as it is traversed past the cutter by the operator comprising a pair of clamping members 4, 6, and a carrier 2 which supports the clamping members and is connected by a universal coupling to an arm 38 which is pivoted on the machine, the arrangement being such as to allow the work to be tilted to bring the heel seat free of the last and shoe bottom member into parallelism with the plane of the cutter if it is inclined thereto. The arm 38 is pivotted to the machine for movement about axes 44, 46 above the cutter shaft and respectively parallel to and perpendicular to the axis of the shaft, so that the work may be moved bodily to and fro axially of the cutter on movement of the arm about the perpendicular axis while being traversed past the cutter on movement of the arm about the parallel axis. The universal coupling comprises a body 8 with a stepped bore 10 housing an oblate spheroid 12, a disc 14 integral with a shaft 16, a disc 18, or spring 22 which makes the coupling self-centring a centralising spring 28 housed in a bore in shaft 16, and a screw 20 for adjusting spring 28, The spheroid has a pin 34 engaged in arm 38, and is held in bore 10 by an apertured plate 32. Link 38 is pivoted at its upper end, by pin 46, to a bar 42 integral with pin 44 rotatable in a block 48 of the dust hood 50. A spring 54 connected to balance link 52 counter balances the weight of the jack and tends to rock arm 38 upwardly, a spring loaded plunger 58 on arm 38 engages an abutment on carrier 2 and counterbalances the weight of carrier 2. Clamping members 4 and 6 are coaxial, the former being fixed and the latter slidable under control of the operator to clamp the work. Specification 806,067 is referred to.
