644,557. Sawing. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY, CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation) Oct. 2, 1948, No. 25701. [Class 145(ii)] A bandsaw for dividing lasts into fore part and heel part comprises a bandsaw, a carriage movable toward and away from the saw, and a last-holder mounted for angular movement on the carriage, the last-holder comprising a pair of last locating devices engaging the fore part and the heel part and arranged for relative movement to separate the fore part and the heel part after the sawing operation. As shown a carriage 23 movable on rails 26 has an adjustable stop 29 to prevent further movement when in the correct sawing position. A last having a fore part 10 and a heel part 11 has a crotch 12 and a saw cut 15 formed by a previous operation and is engaged by pins 16 and 17 on a holder, mounted on the carriage 23. The carriage carrying the last and last-holder is brought into the position shown in Fig. 2, with the saw blade 24 in the crotch and the teeth facing the fore part, and rotated through 180 degrees on a pivot 22 on the arm 21 until the saw enters the cut 15. The arms 20 and 21 may then be separated by rotation of the arm 20 about a pivot 25, preferably by the action of a spring, Fig. 5 (not shown). The carriage may then be withdrawn and the holder unloaded without fear of damage to the saw, the last or the operator.
