Abstract
616,910. Cutting machines, work-holding devices. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and HEATHER, C. H. Sept. 20, 1946, Nos. 28182 and 36932. [Class 31(i)] In a machine in which a blank of sheet material is held between a pair of workholding members for trimming to shape by relative movements of the blank and a cutter and in which one of such members has an outline of the shape to which the material is to be cut, a work-holding member is of an unyielding nature or is thinner at its two ends and is resilient or thicker at its intermediate portion. The device is intended primarily for holding blanks from which shoe insoles are to be cut, said blanks being reinforced and hence of greater thickness at the toe and heel portions. The example shown in Fig. 3 comprises a wooden clamping member 1 having strips of rubber 13 let into the wood so that the thinner portion of the blank will be firmly held by the rubber strips during cutting. In a modification, Fig. 5, the wooden member 15 has a recess 17 in which is secured a metal plate having spring fingers 23 at its outer edges, which fingers normally project just above the surface of the member 15. In a further modification, the metal plate of Fig. 5 may be replaced by a sheet of rubber. Specification 1070/08, [Class 31], is referred to as describing the type of machine concerned.
