Abstract
571,371. Boot - making machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and ROBERTS, W. T. B. Oct. 5, 1943, No. 16298. [Class 17 (i)] Lasting.-An end-lasting machine is provided with means for varying at will the retracted, inoperative, position of the wipers without varying the position to which they move at the limit of their wiping stroke. By this arrangement, the retracted wipers may be positioned with their edges some little distance away from an upper which has been properly positioned on its last in the machine, whereby the positioning of thick, stubborn uppers in the machine is facilitated. As applied to the machine described in Specification 470,749, the cam track 1 which produces the swing of the wipers, not shown, is widened at the portion corresponding to the retracted position of the wipers, the outer face at this portion being formed by a pivoted piece 11 held inwardly by a spring 13. The cam track, not shown, which produces the inward movement of the wipers has a similar construction embodying a spring plunger. The respective cam-levers 3, 7 are adapted to be engaged by a pair of adjustable stop rods 29 in order to limit their clockwise movement, the rods being under the operator's control by means of a link 35. The forward or rearward position of the link 35 determines whether the wipers shall stop in their most or their less retracted position, the piece 11 and the spring plunger yielding in the latter position to widen the cam tracks.
