Abstract
455,043. Sewing - machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., GOULDBOURN, J., and KESTELL, T. A., Belgrave Road, Leicester. March 8, 1935, No. 7243. Addition to 330,521, [Class 112]. [Class 112] In a machine for sewing bags, suitcases, &c. of the type such as that described in the parent Specification and in Specification 430,984, having stitch-forming, work-feeding, and worksupporting devices including a needle, an awl, work-supporting means adapted to engage two outer surfaces of a case &c., and a horn or presser adapted to engage the inside of the case, and means whereby the work-feeding devices are caused to feed the work continuously through the machine, the worksupporting means 1 provides two work-supporting faces 37, 59 arranged at an angle to each other, and the horn or presser 55 is a bowed member having a work-entering part 57 arranged to lie substantially parallel to the face 59 and supported for swinging movement between positions in which the part 57 extends towards one or other side of the machine, in a mounting so arranged that, during the swinging movement, the part 57 will remain substantially parallel to the face 59. The horn is preferably mounted in a head 53 carried by a shaft 35 rotatable in a sleeve 33 carried by a casting 31, so that the horn may move about the axis of the shaft 35, which is substantially perpendicular to the face 59. The sleeve 33 is pivoted in the casting 31 by means of a pair of pins 51, and the casting 31 is carried by a pair of arms 43, 47 pivoted on rods 39, 41 carried by a bracket 13 pivoted on pins 7. The pins 7 are carried by a pair of arms 21 supported by yokes 23, 25, the yoke 23 being adjustable about a shaft 27 and the yoke 25 about a shaft 19 to vary the angular position of an alternative horn 3 similar to that described in Specification 415,480. The horn 55 is moved to and from the work by mechanism 81, 83, 85, 89, arm 5, rod 93, and arms 91, 47, which rocks the casting 31 and causes the roll 75 to move along a path concentric about the pins 7. The roll 75 may be adjusted relatively to the face 37 to suit various thicknesses of work, by means of a threaded stud 97 which rotates the rod 41 carrying an eccentric on which the rods 47, 91 are mounted. The downward movement of the rod 47 causes the casting 31 to pivot on the pins 45 and rock the horn. If the horn 3 is to be used instead of the horn 5, the latter is withdrawn from the head 53 and the pin 95 connecting the arm 5 to the rod 93 is removed to disconnect the casting 31 from the lever 81. The horn 55 may be swung forwardly to facilitate insertion and removal of the work by treadle mechanism comprising a treadle rod 115 connected to the upper link of a toggle lever 115, 117 biassed towards the straight by a spring 121 to keep the roll 75 pressed against the work. Means similar to that described in Specification 415,480 are provided for canting the work-support 1 when the horn is canted.
