Abstract

330,521. British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd., and Hazelton, G. March 7, 1929. Suit-case stitching-machines; feed by awl; by needle; work-supports.-The continuous feed of a machine specially suited for stitching bags or suit cases has means for controlling the length of feed including a zero feed, adjustable by either hand of the operator. In a single cycle, the work is fed, first by the work support, then by the awl, then by the work support and needle, and lastly by the work support. The work-support and stitch forming devices are similar to those described in Specifications 174,419, 198,430, 222,213, and 308,728 except that in the present machine, the work support has lateral feeding motion. The work supporting table 100 is secured to a slide 1 connected by a bracket 3 to links 5 6, and 14 which in turn connect it to the bell crank lever 16, 18 rocked by a track in a cam 19 to reciprocate the support. The awl 32 is carried on a segment on a bracket 34 sliding in an upright part of the slide 1 and reciprocated by the same track in the cam 19 by the lever 46, shaft 17, and links 45, 46, 39, 37, 35. The needle 20, needle guide 21, and thread lifter 22 travel with the work table 100 in its feeding movements and are mounted for axial adjustment. The links 6 and 39 of the work table and awl feeding mechanisms are pivoted respectively to the arms 9, 41 of the feed control member 10, which is rotated in its bearings 11 by a sliding rod 49, through links 48, 47. The rod 49 has an operating handle at both ends for ease in setting by either hand of the operator, and may have stop pins 51 in various holes 50 for regulating the length of stitch. When the member 10 is rocked so that the pivots 40, 4, and 36 are in axial alignment, no feed takes place. This is the zero position. As the pivot 40 moves away from the pivots 4, 36, the length of the feed, and of the stitch, is increased.
