Abstract

The boiler cavity of a steam iron soleplate is coated with silica or dried silica sol or with a colloidal dispersion of a hydrated silica sol to prevent the iron from "spitting" during use. A single coat or a plurality of coats, which may be as many as thirty may be applied. The coating may comprise "Sudox," Registered Trade Mark, mixed with six parts demineralized water, which is sprayed on, a mesh being placed over the parts not to be coated. The soleplate may be preheated to 400 DEG F. or 500 DEG F. or otherwise heated so that the water is quickly evaporated after each coating.
