Abstract

An aqueous suspension, having increased stability and ease of resuspension, comprises a water-insoluble therapeutic salt of penicillin and an inesital phosphoric acid or a non-toxic salt thereof e.g. sodium phytate which may be present from 0.1 to 2 per cent of the preparation. Suitable penicillin,salts are procaine benzyl penicillin, l-ephenamine penicillin, N.N1 dibenzylethylenediamine dipenicillin, dehydroabietylamine penicillin. N.N1-bis (dehydroabietyl) ethylene diamine penicillin, N-benzyl-betaphenethylamine penicillin, di-benzylamine penicillin, and procaine and other salts of penicillin G, F, X, O, dihydro F and K, or mixtures thereof. The composition may also contain dispersing or suspending agents e.g. sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, lecithin, cholestrol, Falba, "Spans," "Tweens" (Registered Trade Marks) amercalls, sodium, potassium, ammonium or calcium alginates, propylene glycol alginate, alginic acid, polyoxyalkylene derivatives of sorbitol fatty acid esters, urea, sodium p-aminobenzoate, methylcellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinylpyrrolidene, gum tragacanth, gelatin, pectin, dextran, gum karaya, buffering agents e.g. phosphate, citrate buffers, preservatives e.g. phenol, cresol, methyl, ethyl, butyl or propyl paraben.
