773,199. Windscreen cleaners. BROWN, D. S. June 16, 1955 [March 16, 1954], No. 7574/54. Class 138(1) A windscreen and wiper assembly includes a rigid transparent screen, a wiper member formed as a generally cylindrical body which can rotate about its major axis and is movable relatively to the windscreen with a translatory movement such that its major axis remains parallel to the surface of the windscreen and means for imparting the translatory movement to the member and at the same time rotating it continuously about its major axis at a speed such that the peripheral speed at the suface of the windscreen differs from the speed which would result from mere rolling of the wiper member over the surface of the windscreen. In the embodiment shown in.Figs. 1 and 2 the cylindrical wiper member 1 is mounted on a shaft 2 rotatable in bearings 3 and 4 on a spring arm 5 oscillatable with the spindle of a wiper motor (not shown). The member 1 is formed with a three-start helical wiper blade system 6 on its surface, the blades being urged towards the windscreen 7 by the spring 5. A pinion 9 on the shaft 2 engages teeth of a curved rack 8 on a fixed quadrant member 27 whose centre is on the pivoted axis of the arm 5. As the member 1 is oscillated over the windscreen it will be rotated in a direction opposite to that which would result if the member were rolled over the windscreen. In another embodiment the wiper member is linearly reciprocated across the windscreen, by having pinions at each end engaging stationary straight racks at the sides or top and bottom of the windscreen. Each end of the wiper member shaft is also provided with a block engaging a rotatable screwed shaft. The direction of reciprocation of the wiper member may be reversed by reversing the direction of rotation of the screwed shafts or by providing each of the shafts with two opposite-handed threads, in known manner, and rotating the shafts in one direction only. Water or other cleaning liquid or an anti-freeze solution may be supplied to the windscreen by providing the shaft 2 with a hollow centre and the member 1 with a passage or passages terminating at its surface and communicating with the centre of the shaft 2.
