Abstract

The invention comprises salts of the formula <FORM:0773175/IV(a)/1> where M is an alkali metal, a is from 1 to 2 and b is from 1 to 3 inclusive. They are prepared by hydrolysing a chlorosilcarbane of the formula Cl3SiCH2Si(Me)Cl2 and treating the resulting siloxane gel with a alkali metal hydroxide, preferably in the presence of a water-miscible solvent, e.g. alcohol or dioxane. Examples of specific salts are (NaO)OSiCH2Si (Me)(ONa)O0-5, the disiloxane [(NaO)2SiCH2 Si(Me)(ONa)2]2O, (LiO)3SiCH2Si(Me)(OLi)2 and (CsO)OSiVH2Si(Me)(OLi). The salts are used in aqueous solutions to impart water-repelling to masonry, fabrics, glass fibre, metal, wood, paper and soil.
