One end or side of a load carrier 1 is detached from the chassis 5 of its carrier vehicle by tipping the load carrier 1 about the opposite edge or side and then extending legs 41 to engage the ground before retracting the tipping means 20 which is mounted centrally so that it may also tip the load carrier in the opposite direction. In the construction illustrated the rear of the load carrier 1 is disengaged from the vehicle in this way and the vehicle is then driven away so that a pair of wheels 7 on the load carrier run over tracks 6 on the chassis 5 and down ramps 11 to deposit legs 31 on the ground. The axle 10 of the wheels 7 is normally locked to the chassis.by slotted brackets 24 swung about vertical posts 25 by a linkage controlled by a handle 33 in the driver's cab. When however the axles 10 are released and a bar 9 joining the upper parts 4<SP>1</SP> of the telescoping rear legs is locked in a hooked bracket 8 on the chassis the ram 20 which normally serves to tip the load carrier 1 about the axles 10 serves to tip it about the bar 9 to discharge material it carries. As the vehicle is backed beneath the load carrier 1 to load it on to the vehicle the load carrier is aligned with the vehicle by converging vertical flanges on the ramps 11, the horizontal flanges of which are suitably extended. A further device ensures that the rear of the load carrier is also moved into correct alignment with the tracks 6.
