Abstract

587,223. Tip vehicles; rest bars. OSWALD, A. B. (trading as OSWALD & SON, J.). Dec. 28, 1944, No. 25968. [Classes 108 (i) and 108 (ii)] In a two wheeled trailer vehicle tipping about the wheel axle, the means for tipping the vehicle by backward movement of the tractor comprises a telescopic tow-bar 1, 2, the outer sleeve 1 being connected to lugs 3 on the axle 4 and the sliding part 2 being provided with a towing eye and an upstanding strut 7 carrying a roller 9 adapted to roll on an inclined channel 10 and restrained thereon by a stirrup 12, the channel being fixed to the underside of the truck which in the travelling position rests on a support 16 attached to the outer sleeve 1. The sleeve 1 and the sliding part 2 are locked in position by a pin 11 for travelling and a spring- urged bolt 14 is mounted on the part 2 which can be turned when tipping the vehicle so that it automatically drops into one of a series of holes in the bar 2 to limit the tipping angle. Scotches are placed behind the wheels when backing the vehicle for tipping purposes and a jack 17 supports the tow-bar. The height of the tow-bar is adjusted for coupling with the tractor by the jack 17 which slides in a bracket 19 attached to the outer sleeve 1 of the tow-bar, the bracket being provided with a series of holes 20 through any one of which a pin 21 may be passed to rest on the top of the jack, the jack being raised by a tommy bar 26 inserted in one of a series of holes 23 in the bracket and bearing on a pin 22 on the foot of the jack 17 as a fulcrum. The Provisional Specification states that the jack may comprise a rack and pinion adapted to be locked by a spring-pressed catch.
