Abstract

A solid resin is prepared from a sodium copolymer of 100 to 50 per cent butadiene and 0 to 50 per cent styrene by heating the copolymer at a temperature between 110 DEG C. and 175 DEG C. in the presence of 1.0 to 4 per cent of ditertiary butyl peroxide and 10-50 per cent, based on the total mixture, of powdered previously prepared resin derived from the same copolymer. There may also be present 5-40 per cent of a reactive monomer selected from styrene, vinyl toluene, alkyl styrenes, vinyl naphthalene and vinyl biphenyl, while small quantities of a third monomer may also be present in the original polymer, e.g. 2 per cent butyl acrylate. The sodium copolymer may be prepared in a diluent, e.g. naphtha, mineral spirits, butane, benzene, cyclohexane, xylenes, toluenes and pentanes, in the presence of an ether promoter, e.g. dioxane, diethyl ether, and the diethyl ethers of monoor di-ethylene glycol, and an alcohol, e.g. methanol, isopropanol or n-amyl alcohol.
