Abstract

A solid resin is prepared from a sodium catalysed polymer of 100-50 per cent butadiene and 0-50 per cent styrene by heating the polymer at 100-175 DEG C. in the presence of 2-4 per cent of ditertiary butyl peroxide and 5-40 per cent of a reactive monomer. Specified monomers are styrene, vinyl toluene. alkyl styrenes, halo-styrenes, vinyl naphthalene, maleic anhydride, alkyl maleates and alkyl fumarates. The solid resin may be prepared by polymerization in a diluent, e.g. naphtha, Varsol, butane, benzene, cyclohexane, xylene, toluene, pentane or mixtures thereof, in the presence of an ether promoter, e.g. dioxane, its methyl and ethyl derivatives, diethyl ether, and the di-ethyl ethers of ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol and of an alcohol, e.g. methanol, isopropanol or n-amyl alcohol.
