Abstract
Polymer blends comprise (i) a rigid styrene polymer in admixture with (ii) a graft copolymer prepared by polymerizing styrene in an <PICT:0899999/IV (a)/1> aqueous dispersion of a rubbery diene polymer having a brittle temperature of 0 DEG C. or lower and consisting of: (a) 50 to 100% by weight of butadiene and/or a methyl substituted conjugated 1,3-diene, e.g. isoprene, (b) 50-0% by weight of one or more monovinylidene aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. styrene, alphamethyl styrene or vinyl toluene, (c) up to 10% by weight of other polymerizable vinylidene monomers, e.g. acrylonitrile or acrylic or methacrylic esters, and (d) up to 1% by weight of a monomer containing a plurality of non-conjugated ethylenic linkages, e.g. divinyl benzene, the amount of dispersed styrene being such that the composition of the resulting graft polymer lies within the area bounded by curve A in Fig. 1, and the polymerization being carried out in the substantial absence of emulsifying agents other than those present during the production of the rubbery polymer, the proportions of polymers (i) and (ii) being such that the rubbery polymer employed in the production of (ii) is present in an amount corresponding to 5-40% by weight of the mixture. The rigid styrene polymer may be polystyrene or a copolymer of styrene containing up to 40% of one or more other monomers, e.g. alpha-methyl styrene, butadiene, isoprene, and the amides, nitriles and methyl, ethyl and butyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids.
