Abstract

772,956. Package-tying machines. BUNN CO., B. H. April 22, 1954 [Sept. 29, 1953], No. 11642/54. Class 94(1). In a machine of known type comprising a package-supporting table 10 and an intermittently rotated twine carrier 18 which is driven from a motor 30 through a clutch 36, shaft 35 and mutilated gear 38 meshing with a gear 39, the engagement and disengagement of the clutch is controlled by a lever 68 arranged in an opening in the table so as to be depressed by a package 71 positioned on the table against an abutment 16 by the operator. In one form, Figs. 5 and 7, the clutch-operating lever 47 carries a roller 51 which is actuated by a cam 53, driven in synchronism with the gear 38, through a pivoted follower 57 and a slidable link 56 coupled to one arm of a spring-loaded bellcrank lever 64. The other arm of the lever is coupled by a rod 66 to the lever 68, so that when the latter is depressed by the package, the link 56 is withdrawn from between the roller 51 and follower 57 and the clutch is allowed to engage under the action of its spring. When the tied package is removed, the link 56 is interposed between the roller and follower and the cam then operates to disengage the clutch. In a second form, Fig. 9, the rod 66 is replaced by a floating link 74 having its upper end engaging the under surface of the lever 68 under the action of a spring 79 and its lower end engaging a roller 73 on the bell-crank lever 64a. The link is formed with a cam surface 80 which engages a screw 81 under the action of a spring 82, so that after the lever 64a has been operated to allow engagement of the clutch, the lower end of the link rides off the roller and allows the lever to be restored to its initial position under the action of the spring 72. With this arrangement, the clutch is disengaged after one complete revolution of the cam 53, even though the lever 68 remains depressed by a package. The gear 39, Fig. 12, carries a pivoted shoe 86 which engages a cam surface 89 on the gear 38, so that the twine carrier 18 is brought to rest in a predetermined position after each rotation. The twine carrier is also acted on by a friction brake, (see Fig. 3A (not shown)). The twine is fed to the carrier from a supply 20,through an aperture plate 25, Fig. 2, and is tensioned by a leaf spring 27 whose convex end 29 engages the twine above the aperture. Specification 449,019 is referred to.
