Abstract

1,062,601. Clutch control. TORRINGTON CO. July 2, 1964 [July 25, 1963], No. 27279/64. Heading F2L. [Also in Division D1] Clutch control means comprises a driving pulley journalled on a shaft and provided with a clutch face, a member loosely journalled on the shaft and engaged with means thereon to rotate the shaft, said member being provided on one side with a clutch face and on the opposite side with a brake face, a clutch lever, and reciprocable cam means for moving said lever into engagement with means associated with said member for inter-engaging said clutch faces. As shown, the frame 11 of a sewing machine is formed with a brake surface 13 and journals a main shaft 14. A driving pulley 16, journalled on shaft 14, is formed with a clutch surface 18. A collar 30, slidable on shaft 14, is rigid with a drum 19 carrying abutments (27), Fig. 5, angularly adjustable about the axis of shaft 14 and slidably embracing a dog (29) rigid with the latter, compression springs being interposed between drum 19 and dog (29). Drum 19 carries a hand wheel 21, and is formed on opposite faces with clutch and brake surfaces 22 and 23 respectively. A slidable bar 53 is connected by a link 71 to a treadle 72 on which is mounted a microswitch 100 actuable by a toe lever 101. When treadle 72 is horizontal, drum 19 is free from surfaces 13 and 18 and a spring 85 biases a brake shoe 63 against hand wheel 21. When treadle 72 is actuated to lower bar 53, a member 57 on bar 53 engages a lever 56 associated with spring 65 to withdraw brake shoe 63 from hand wheel 21, and a cam depression 78 in bar 53 co-operates with a follower at the lower end of a lever 41 to pivot lever 41 about its fulcrum 39, whereby the upper end of lever 41 shifts a member 34, slidable on shaft 14, into engagement with a flange 31 on collar 30 to shift the latter for inter-engaging surfaces 18 and 22 to drive shaft 14. To stop the machine, treadle 72 is actuated to raise bar 53, when a member 80 on the latter shifts a microswitch 79 to a second position, whereby a rotary solenoid 84 is momentarily energized via the first position of a microswitch 97 and the first position of a microswitch 83 vibrated between two positions by means of a cam on shaft 14. Solenoid 84 turns a cam disc 93 to shift microswitches 97, 98, 99 to their second positions, whereby energization of solenoid 84 is continued via microswitch 97 and a resistor. Solenoid 84 also turns a cam disc 89 to pivot a lever 42 about its fulcrum 39 to position a follower on lever 42 in the path of a cam lobe 32 on flange 31. Reaction between said follower and lobe serves to shift collar 30 for disengaging clutch surfaces 18, 22 and inter-engaging brake surfaces 13, 23 for stopping the machine. A rotary solenoid 91 is energized, after a time delay, via microswitches 79, 99 and 100, whereby arm 92 is swung to engage a pin 90 on cam disc 89 for re-setting solenoid 84 and returning the microswitches 97, 98, 99 to their first positions. For effecting a single revolution of shaft 14, treadle 72 is actuated to lower bar 53, and microswitch 100 is simultaneously actuated to a second position. The machine is thereby started, but solenoid 84 is initially energized via the second positions of switches 100 and 83, and is then energized through the resistor via the second positions of switches 100 and 98. Lever 42 then shifts collar 30 to stop the machine against a yielding connection provided between lever 42 and bar 53 now in its raised position.
