772,919. Inertia switches. SPECIALTIES DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Aug 8. 1955 [Nov. 24, 1954], No. 22757/55. Class 38(5) An inertia switch, suitable for actuation by the deceleration of an aircraft, comprises a pendulum 10 pivoted on a shaft 24 and biased clockwise by a spring 12, the weighty end 26 carrying a contact 15 and being linked to dashpot means comprising a plunger 36, moving in a cylinder 35. If the switch, moving to the left, is decelerated the pendulum pivots and contact 15 engages'an adjustable fixed contact 16. Actuation of the switch depends on the magnitude and duration of the deceleration. Adjustment for the former is made by varying the force of the spring 12 the inner end of which is attached to shaft 24 and the outer end to a casing 30 rotatable on a plate 31 and capable of being held in position by screw 33. Adjustment for the duration of deceleration is made by varying a needle valve communication 40, 41 between the chamber 35 and the outside atmosphere. The shaft 24 is journalled on ball bearings 22 and the movement of the pendulum is limited by a screwthreaded stop member 28. A hermetically sealed can encloses the switch.
