Abstract

Cellulose textile materials, e.g. cotton, regenerated cellulose or saponified cellulose ester fibres, if desired in admixture with other fibres such as silk, cellulose ester or ether and synthetic linear polymer fibres, are dyed by impregnation with a composition comprising an alkali metal phosphate in which the molecular ratio of alkali-metal oxide to phosphorus pentoxide is less than 3 : 2, a direct cotton dyestuff capable of forming a complex copper compound and a copper compound which is capable of converting the dyestuff into a complex copper compound, and then steaming. The composition may be applied by printing, locally or otherwise, spraying or padding. Alkali-metal poly- and poly-meta-phosphates such as Graham's Salt and sodium hexametaphosphate may be employed. Suitable copper compounds are cupric acetate and sodium copper tartrate. Copper compounds may also be used in conjunction with ammonia or basic nitrogenous organic compounds, several of which are specified, especially such as form-?-/- soluble copper complexes containing non-ionic copper. The printing paste may also contain urea and an alkali metal carbonate or hydroxide. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 737,800 [Group IV(b)].
