Abstract
In the dyeing or printing of cellulose-containing textile materials, a neutral to alkaline dyebath or printing paste is employed which contains (a) an amine having at least one amino group separated from a hydroxyl group (which may be present in a carboxylic acid group) by two carbon atoms, (b) a compound containing anions of a phosphoric acid, (c) an alkali-resistant agent yielding copper (to metallize the dyestuff) and (d) a dyestuff which is free from complex-forming metal but is capable of forming a sparingly soluble copper compound and which contains at least two azo linkages and, as metallizable groups, exclusively ortho-oxy-carboxylic acid groups, the dyestuff being so chosen that its copper compound, after being separated from an alkaline medium, passes into solution to an extent of at least 90 per cent when it is dissolved in 50 times its weight of boiling water with the addition of twice its weight of 1:2-de-(b -oxyethylamino)-ethane. In modifications, constituents (b) and (c) may be combined as a copper phosphate and constituents (a), (b) and (c) may be combined as the reaction product of a copper phosphate with the amine. Specified amines are monoethanolamine, aminoacetic acid, b -oxyethylaminoacetic acid, 2-amino-1-oxybenzene-4-sulphonamide and those of the following formulae:- <FORM:0763973/IV(b)/1> Compounds containing anions of a phosphoric acid are orthophosphates, pyrophosphates and polyphosphates. Alkali-resistant copper-yielding compounds are complex copper compounds of aliphatic-oxy-carboxylic acids such as tartaric, lactic and citric acids. Examples of agents in which the amine, phosphoric acid anions and the copper compound are combined are the copper ortho- or pyro-phosphate complexes of 1:2-di-(b -oxyethylamino)-ethane. The dyestuffs described in Specifications 555,791 [Group IV], 684,527, 706,380 and 714,457 may be employed. Urea, saccharose, dextrin, sodium sulphate and tragacanth thickening are specified additions to the bath or paste. The dyeings or prints may be after-treated with the reaction products of formaldehyde with cyanamide, dicyandiamide, dicyandiamidine or melamine to improve their wet-fastness properties. Examples describe the dyeing of cotton, Example 4 pertaining to printing. Specification 737,800 also is referred to.
