Abstract

Dyeings which have been produced with dyestuffs whose complex copper compounds are sparingly soluble or insoluble in dilute alkaline baths, and which have been after-treated with copper compounds, are improved by further treatment with a water-soluble reaction product of formaldehyde with a compound of the urea group which consists of elements of an atomic weight not greater than 16 and contains less oxygen relatively to carbon than is present in urea, e.g., cyanamide, dicyandiamide, dicyandiamidine, melamine, guanidine, acetoguanidine, or biguanide. In an example, cotton yarn or regenerated cellulose staple fibres are dyed from a bath containing the dyestuff 1 - amino - 2 - methoxybenzene - 4 - sulphonic acid - W2 - (41 - amino) - benzoylamino - 5 - oxynaphthalene - 7 - sulphonic acid --> 8 - oxyquinoline, sodium carbonate, sodium sulphate and the sodium salt of N-methyl-m -heptadecyl-benzimidazole sulphonic acid, coppered by adding a solution of copper sulphate and tartaric acid neutralized with caustic soda, rinsed, and further treated in a solution of the water-soluble condensation product of dicyandiamidine and formaldehyde. In place of the above dyestuff there may be used the dyestuff 4,41 - diamino - 3,31 - dioxydiphenyl \sQ 1 - (41 - oxy - 31 - carboxy) - phenyl - 3 - methyl-5 - pyrazolone, or 4,41 - diamino - 3,31 - dioxydiphenyl \sQ 1 - (31 - sulphonamido) - phenyl - 3 - methyl - 5 - pyrazolone, or 4-amino-41-oxy - 2 - methyl - 5 - methoxy -1,11-azobenzene - 31-, carboxylic acid (2 mols.) --> 5,51 - dioxy - 2-21 - dinaphthylamine - 7,71 - disulphonic acid. In a second example, mixed yarn of wool and regenerated cellulose staple fibres is dyed from a bath containing 4,41-diamino-3,31-dioxyphenyl \sQ 1 - (41 - oxy - 31 - carboxy) - phenyl-3 - methyl - 5 - pyrazolone, 2 - amino - 4 - chloro-1,11 - diphenyl ether --> 1 - p - toluene sulphonylamino - 8 - oxynaphthalene - 3,6 - disulphonic acid, the sodium salt of N-methyl-m -heptadecyl-benzimidazole sulphonic acid and sodium sulphate, the dyeing developed by adding a neutralized solution of copper sulphate and tartaric acid, and then treated with a water-soluble condensation product from dicyandiamidine and formaldehyde. Specification 455,274 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes also an example in which Cotton Blue N or Diamine Brown M is the dyestuff used. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
