Class 38(3) Relates to a rheostatic starter for electrically-driven sewing machines whch may be converted as desired to knee-lever, foot, or pull-cord operation. As shown, the variable resistor 12, which may be of the carbon pile type, has an actuating rod 15 which is biased by means of a spring 16 and is provided with an operating member 14 of suitable insulating material. For effecting foot or knee operation, a bent lever having prongs 18 and an arm 20 is pivotally and removably mounted on a shaft 19 within the controller housing, the cut-out ends of the prongs 18 engaging a rod 26 secured in the member 14. The end of the arm 20 carries a removable roller 28 to provide a pedal when the controller is to be adapted for foot-operation. If the controller is to be used for knee-lever operation, the roller 28 is removed and is replaced by an extension member which is held on the lever 20 by means of a bent tongue, Figs. 5A, 5B (not shown). In this case, the controller may be mounted in a vertical position on the inside of the cabinet of the sewing machine, Fig. 5 (not shown). For pull-cord operation, an auxiliary lever arm 35 has one end pivotally coupled to the member 14 and has its other end secured to the shaft 36. The extending end of this shaft is removably coupled to a lever 38 which is attached to a pullcord 42 or the like. The controller housing is fitted on its base with supports of rubber or like material which are mounted on slotted adjusting plates 47 so that, for foot operation of the controller, the supports may be located within the confines of the housing, and, for mounting the controller vertically the slides are extended and are held to the wall by screws or the like, Fig. 8 (not shown).
