Abstract

770,331. Fluid-pressure blasting devices. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 8, 1955 [Sept. 24, 1954], No. 27638/54. Class 9 (1). A fluid-pressure blasting device 5 having a chamber 11 into which gas is fed through an inlet 12 until the pressure on a closure valve 25 is sufficient to rupture a cotter pin 27 extending through the valve stem 26 is provided with a jacket 17 into which water is led through an inlet 18. From the jacket, the water escapes through outlets 19 into the borehole. Mounted on the jacket are annular members 16 holding in position a collar 15 of rubber-like sheet material, which may have metal reinforcements at the ends engaging the members 16. On inserting the device in a borehole, the water supply is turned on and passes through the jacket displacing residual air in the borehole. Gas, e.g. compressed air, is then admitted at a controlled pressure through a reducing valve 8 in the supply line 7, Fig. 1, and passes from the chamber 11 through a conduit 13 to force the collar 15 into sealing engagement with the borehole. When the water seeps through the surrounding strata the gas pressure is increased until the pin 27 fractures and the valve moves to open ports 24 through which the gas is vented into the borehole.
