Abstract

769,015. Vacuum cleaners. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and JONES, T. G. May 6, 1955 [May 7, 1954], No. 13407/54. Class 8(1) [Also in Group XXXV] In an electrically driven vacuum cleaner of the upright or stick type in which a housing provided with a suction nozzle and a fan driven by an electric motor is arranged to be propelled over a floor with the nozzle in contact with or close to the floor and in which said motor is in a different compartment, a ventilating tube is located one side of the fan shaft axis and connects the motor compartment with the main air intake of the vacuum cleaner so allowing for air to be drawn from the motor compartment into the main air intake. The Figure shows the underside of the housing 1 (with cover plate, revolving brush &c. removed), mounted on wheels 2 and having air intake compartment 3, a fan chamber, a separate compartment 5 housing a motor 6 the shaft of which projects horizontally through a wall 7 defining the rear of the fan chamber, and a ventilating tube 8. The motor compartment 5 may have air inlet holes placed remotely from tube 8 in such manner that air drawn through said compartment into the main air intake flows over the whole of the external surface of the motor.
