Abstract

768,928. Brushes for dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 5, 1955, No. 13087/55. Class 35. A brush for a dynamo-electric machine comprises main portion(s). consisting of currentconductive material which is at least carbonaceous and the auxiliary portion(s) consisting of current-conductive material having film-forming properties and including a compound having chemical affinity for carbon. Fig. 1 shows a carbon brush made in two parts 1, 2 having holes in which the material constituting the auxiliary portions is contained as lubricating plugs 8-11. Each plug 8-11 comprises a compound of a metal with an element such as oxygen, sulphur, nitrogen, phosphorus or a halogen. This compound may be molybdenum with a metal such as silver or copper. The compound is introduced into the holes by tamping the material as powder into the holes to form solid plugs or the plugs may be preformed and introduced into the holes proportioned to receive them. The main portion(s) of the brush may comprise a mixture of unimpregnated carbon or mixtures of carbon and a metal, e.g. copper or silver. Alternatively, an undivided brush 20 may be used having a single insert 19 as the auxiliary portion as in Fig. 4.
