Abstract

768,881. Windscreen cleaners and washers. BOSCH GES., R. April 5, 1955 [June 29, 1954], No. 9881/55. Class 138(1) In a wiping and washing device for transparent screens, e.g. windscreens, liquid is sprayed directly on to the screen through at least one nozzle which is movable relatively to the wiper but participates in the movements of the wiper, the nozzle and wiper being relatively displaced automatically during operation of the wiper so that liquid impinges on the screen only in advance of the wiper, at least over a substantial portion of each wiping stroke. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the wiper arm 6 is positively secured to a shaft 4 oscillated by a crank 5 in known manner. The shaft 4 has a horizontal bore 10, connected by a flexible 'tube 11 to a supply of water, and a transverse bore 12. Frictionally engaging the shaft is a rubber bush 13, Fig. 6, carrying a nozzle 8 communicating with a radial passage 15 in the bush, which passage 15 'is always in communication with the bore 12. A cap member 14 is secured to the bush by having a projection 16 engaging in a groove 17 on the bush. The cap 14 encloses a fixed bush 3 for the shaft 4, and has a projection 22 which is engageable alternatively with one of two lugs 20, Fig. 7. of a ring member 18 adjustably fixed relative to the bush 3 by a nut 19. The lugs 20 are secured with noise-damping material 21. The nozzle 8 normally moves with the shaft 4 and arm 6 in advance of the arm. However, towards the end of a wiping stroke the projection 22 engages a stop 20 and the nozzle is retained stationary, the shaft continuing to rotate relative to the bush-beyond the nozzle, until it reaches the end. of a. wiping stroke. When the shaft reverse its movement the nozzle will again be in.' advance. of the wiper arm until the arm nears the end of its stroke, whereupon the arm, advarices beyond the nozzle. In the embodiment of Fig. 9, wherein the wiper arm is secured to the shaft 4, the nozzle 8 is carried by a rubber ring 24 rotatably mounted between end flanges of a ring member 23 secured on the bush 3. The annular space between the 'rings 23, 24 is connected by a tube 25 with a supply of water: The nozzle 8 passes through a slot 26 in a ring member 27 fixed to the ring 23. The cap 14. secured to the bush 13 frictionally engaging the wiper shaft 4, has a bulge portion 29 embracing the nozzle. As the shaft, bush 13 and cap rotate the nozzle also rotates until it engages one or other of the ends of the slot 26, whereafter the shaft and thus the wiper arm secured thereto, rotate relative to the bush. In a further embodiment, water is supplied to a hollow wiper shaft to which is fixedly secured the nozzle 8 and the wiper arm has a frictional lost-motion connection with the shaft. A rubber bush member engaging the shaft is secured in the wiper arm, and has an arcuate slot which engages a pin secured to the mounting member which secures the nozzle on the shaft
