Abstract

860,087. Windscreen wipers. SWF. SPEZIALFABRIK FUR AUTOZUBEHOR G. RAU G.m.b.H. Feb. 13, 1957, No. 5010/57. Class 138(l). A device for washing and wiping vehicle windscreens comprises a drive means for the wiper blade connected to a drive means for a water pump, the compression stroke for the pump being effected by a mechanical connection between the actuating rod of the pump and cam means mounted on the wiper drive, the suction stroke of the pump being effected by a spring. As shown a windscreen wiper mechanism 1 drives two wiper blades 5 and is mechanically connected to a water pump 2 which has a suction connection to a water container 3 and a discharge connection to spray nozzles 4. When an electric switch 7 has both pairs of contacts closed the drive motor and an electro magnet are energised and when only the upper pair, as shown, are connected the drive motor alone is energised. The electromagnet 31, Fig. 2, attracts a solenoid 37 connected to a link 26 pivoted on a bracket at 27. A second link pivoted intermediate its length to the link 26, has one end pivoted to a pump actuating rod and the other carries a cam follower ; actuation of the electromagnet brings the cam follower into contact with a cam 10 mounted on the drive motor and causes the discharge stroke of the pump the return stroke being performed by a spring 34. The cam may be in the form of a segment mounted on the wiper shaft, Fig. 4 (not shown), or on a rod operating the wiper shaft, Fig. 5 (not shown), and may act on the water pump through an electromagnet. A Bowden cable may be used in place of an electromagnet to bring the pump into operation.
