Abstract

661,302. Control of two motors. LUCAS, Ltd., J. March 20, 1950. [April 12, 1949] No. 9856/49. Class 38 (iii). [Also in Group XXIII] Relates to a control system for two windscreen wipers (see Group XXIII) which ensures proper co-ordination of the movements of the two wiper arms. Two electric motors p, driving wiper arms d through the medium of crank and reduction gearing, racks f and pinions b, are controlled by two-way switches associated with each arm as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In Fig. 2 the switch blades h, have been moved by the racks f at the ends of their strokes to close contacts o, n on the blades h and on blades j respectively. If a manual switch r is now made the left hand contacts o, n, control the circuit of the right motor p and the right hand contacts o, n, control the circuit of the left hand motor p. The circuits are energised from a battery q. As the racks are reciprocated the blades h return to a position so that the contacts o, m are closed, the contacts m being provided on switch blades i. The motors p are then controlled by their associated two-way switches as shown in Fig. 3. If one motor should run faster than the other it will be brought to rest when its associated rack causes its associated contacts o, m to open and its contacts o, n, to close. This motor will then only restart when the other motor causes its associated rack to open its associated contacts o, m and close its contacts o, n. The condition shown in Fig. 1 will then be effected and the two wiper arms will again be oscillated.
