Class 99(1) [Also in Group XXIX] In an adapter 1, Fig. 1, for connecting a through-flow appliance, such as a gas or water meter (not shown) in a service or installation pipe line comprising a housing having two separate conduits 2, 3 for connection with the pipe line and communicating with two coaxial conduits 5. 6 for connection with the coaxial inlet and outlet of the appliance; valve means 9, 10 are built into the adapter for opening or closing the passages 7, 8 between the conduits 2 and 6 and 3 and 5, respectively. In a modification, the separate conduits, 17, 18, Fig. 2, are mutually disposed at right angles and connected to the coaxial conduits 20. 21, the cock 22, Fig. 5, being mounted in a conical bore 16, Fig. 2, which is aligned with the conduit 18; the cock 22 has two passages 23, 24, Fig. 5, the former being concentric with the cock. In other modifications, the separate conduits are coaxial or mutually at right angles and perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the cock. In a final modification, the coaxial conduits 5 and 6, Fig. 8, are traversed by a hollow cock 39 journalled in the casing 1 whilst in a block 43 attached to the cock is the spindle 44<SP>1</SP> of a screw valve 44 provided with packing 45. In the closed position the valve abuts a central raised part 42 of the cock via a packing ring 46. During normal operation the fluid enters the socket 2 and flows through the conduit 5 to the meter, the outlet from which is connected to the conduit 3 by way of the conduit 6. When the meter is to be removed the valve 44 is opened to interconnect conduits 5 and 6 after which the cock is turned to the closed position.
