Abstract

743,972. Pipe couplings. ELLIOTT BROS. (LONDON), Ltd. May 18,1951 [May 25, 1950], No. 13191/50. Class 99(1). In a system for connecting the pressure fluid conduits of a number of related pieces of apparatus, such as pressure regulators, filters, pilot valves or control instruments, to one another and/or to a source of fluid supply, fluid passages 8, 9 formed within the thickness of a panel lead to outlets and inlets in one or more faces of the panel whereby apparatus 15, 20 and 30 having inlets and outlets can be detachably coupled in a leakproof manner with appropriate outlets and inlets in the panel. The panel shown is for selectively connecting a pneumatic controller, a unit for converting an electric signal into a pneumatic pressure, a pilot valve and a pressure regulator, and consists of plates 1, 2 fixed to an intermediate block 3, gaskets 13 being interposed. Grooves are formed in the faces of the block to provide the passages 8, 9, and bores 10 connect the grooves and may extend only part way through the block to communicate with a passage opening into one of the edges of the block. At each point where a connection to a passage 8 or 9 is to be made, an inlet or outlet is provided, four (4 ... 7) being shown, each consisting of a socket 16, Fig. 1, ending in a recess 17 in which is a packing ring 18. Each piece of apparatus has tubular spigots 14 forming fluidtight joints with the rings when plugged in to the panel. A non-return valve 25 mounted in a socket to prevent escape of fluid under pressure is unseated by a pin 35 projecting from a spigot. Sockets 16a, Fig. 3, may be provided in a unit 20 and spigots 14a on the panel, and a spigot may contain a slidable part 31a adapted to unseat a valve 25a on engaging the bottom 38 of a socket. Positive means such as screws 39 may secure a plugged-in unit.
