Abstract

The invention comprises fatty acid salts of polyhydroxy-polyamines of the formula <FORM:0767596/IV(b)/1> where X is alkylene which interposes 2-12 carbon atoms between the nitrogen atoms and which may be interrupted by oxygen atoms, Y is alkylene or cycloalkylene which interposes 2 or 3 carbon atoms between the nitrogen atoms, Z is a straight or branched alkylene group of 2 or more carbon atoms, R1 and R2 are hydrogen, C1-C4 alkyl or one of the following acid groups or alkali metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium salts thereof: -CH2COOH, -CH2CH2COOH, -CH2PO(OH)2, -CH2CH2PO(OH)2, -CH2CH2SO3H; D is a molecule of a soap-forming fatty acid and n is 0 or 1. The salts are made by heating the components in an aqueous medium, the parent amines being described in the parent Specification and Specification 750 481. The following are described in the examples: (1) X = C2H4OC2H4; Y = Z = ethylene, R1 = R2 = H, D = stearic acid (1 or 2); (2) X = dodecamethylene; Y = Z = ethylene; R1 = R2 = ethyl, D = lauric acid (2); (3) X = tetramethylene, Y = Z = trimethylene, R1 = R2 = ethyl, D = oleic acid (2); (4) X = octamethylene, Y = ethylene, Z = tetramethylene, R1 = R2 = methyl, D = palmitic acid (2); (5) X = C2H4OC2H4, Y = Z = ethylene, R1 = R2 = carboxymethyl, D = stearic acid (1); (6) X = C2H4OC2H4, Y = trimethylene, Z = ethylene, R1 = R2 = carboxymethyl, D = stearic acid (2); (7) X = tetramethylene, Y = Z = ethylene, R1 = R2 = carboxyethyl, D = lauric acid (2); (8) X = C2H4OC2H4; Y = Z = ethylene, R1 = R2 = phosphonoethyl, D = oleic acid (2); (9) X = octamethylene; Y = Z = ethylene, R1 = R2 = sulphoethyl, D = palmitic acid (2); (10) X = octamethylene, Y = ethylene, Z = tetramethylene, R1 = R2 = carboxymethyl, D = stearic acid (2). Other compounds are mentioned in which Y is o-cyclohexylene. Y may also be propylene, R1 and R2 may be propyl, isopropyl or butyl and D may represent myristic or linoleic acid. The products are detergents and sequestering agents.
