Abstract

A solid, pasty or liquid shampoo comprises (a) a cationic salt compound derived from an organic base containing at least one aliphatic hydrocarbon residue having more than 7 carbon atoms and at least one tertiary nitrogen atom, the base being an acid addition or quaternary ammonium salt and the cation of the cationic salt being free from anionic radicals, and (b) a glycol ether derived from 1 mole of a C6-C11 branched-chain aliphatic alcohol, the main chain of which contains at least 5 carbon atoms, with up to 15 moles of ethylene oxide. The cationic salt may be derived from basic compounds having the following general Formula (i) <FORM:1014887/C4-C5/1> where n is 1 or 2, m is an integer from 1 to 5, R1 is a C11-C18 aliphatic hydrocarbon residue, R2 is a C1-C6 alkylene radical, or when n = 1 and m = 2 R2 is -CH2.CHOH.CH2-, and R3 R4 and R5 each are H or a C1-C4 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical or the group <FORM:1014887/C4-C5/2> where A and A1 each are H or a C1-C4 alky or hydroxyalkyl radical; or one of R3, R4 and R5 is a C8-C11 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, the other symbols having the above meanings. (ii) <FORM:1014887/C4-C5/3> where R1 is a C11-C18 aliphatic hydrocarbon residue, B is H or <FORM:1014887/C4-C5/4> where R is a C1-C6 alkylene radical and A and A1 are each H or a C1-C4 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical. (iii) <FORM:1014887/C4-C5/5> where n is 1 or 2, R1 is a C11-C18 aliphatic hydrocarbon residue, R1 and R11 each are a C1-C4 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical or when R1 is H, R11 is <FORM:1014887/C4-C5/6> where A and A1 each are H or a C1-C4 alky or hydroxyalkyl group. or (iv) <FORM:1014887/C4-C5/7> The selected tertiary amines may be converted into either salts with inorganic acids, e.g. hydrochloric acid or organic acids, or quaternary ammonium compounds with a quaternating agent, e.g. methyl iodide, dimethyl sulphate, benzyl chloride, ethylene chlorohydrin or a polyglycol chloride. The glycol ether (b) may be derived from 2-ethyl hexanol. The shampoo may have a pH of 3-7 which may be adjusted with acetic, adipic, tartaric, malic, nitrilotriacetic, ethylene - diamine - tetraacetic, citric, lactic, glycollic or phosphoric acid or an acid phosphate or a mixture of organic and inorganic acids, e.g. phosphoric and citric acid. The shampoo may also contain polyvinyl pyrollidine, fatty acid alkanolamides, e.g. coconut oil fatty acid hydroxyethylamide, perfume, dyestuffs, bleaching agents or thickening agents. Specified thickening agents include high molecular weight condensates of ethylene oxide (e.g. 80 or more mols.) with fatty alcohols, amines, and dehydroasietyl alcohol; the reaction product of hexamethylene diisocyanate with the condensate of oleyl alcohol and 80 moles ethylene oxide; the reaction product of 1 mol. coconut oil fatty acid with 2 mols. diethanolamine; polyethylene glycol (n.w. 20,000) hydroxylated cellulose; and finely-dispersed silicic acid.
