Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:1078101/C2/1> in which R is an alkyl aralkyl alkenyl hydroxyalkyl or halogenated alkyl radical having from 4 to 24 carbon atoms and R1 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and their salts. The compounds are prepared by condensing an appropriate acid R-COOH with aminoethylethanolamine to form an N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-imidazoline intermediate which is then mixed with acrylic or methacrylic acid or an ester thereof to give the desired imidazoline, water being provided in the case when an ester is used to hydrolyse the ester group to the free acid.ALSO:Cosmetic preparations comprising an aqueous phase and a mineral oil contain, as emulsifiers, compounds of the general formula <FORM:1078101/A5-A6/1> in which R is an alkyl, aralkyl, alkenyl, hydroxy-alkyl, or halogenated alkyl radical containing 4-24 carbon atoms and R1 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, or their salts.
