Abstract

Bactericidal compositions contain, as bactericidally active ingredients, 6- alkyl-5-indanols of the formula: <IMAGE> in which R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group and X is a hydrogen or halogen atom, preferred compositions being those in which R is an alkyl group containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms and X is hydrogen. The compositions may take the form of solutions of the active ingredients in organic solvents or aqueous suspensions or emulsions of the active ingredients which may also contain organic solvents. Compounds of the formula I in which R and/or X is other than hydrogen are new compounds.
