Abstract
766,922. Contact members for switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 8, 1954 [Sept. 14. 1953], No. 26034/54. Class 38(5) A contact member particularly suitable for use in transformer tap changing switches is immersed in an inert medium such as oil, nitrogen or rare gases, and comprises a conducting base covered with a layer of copper oxide 0.002 to 0.008 mils. in thickness which serves as the contacting surface. The arrangement avoids the galling or wearing of the surface due to the surfaces coming into sliding contact under pressure. Fig. 1 shows a tap-changing switch in which each fixed contact 18 is adapted to be in turn gripped between contacts 17 pressed strongly together by a spring 19 and mounted on a rotary arm 13.
