Abstract

470,875. Switch contacts. WEST & CO., Ltd., A., MATTHEWS, H. H., and JONES, J. E. April 20, 1936, No. 11260. [Class 38 (v)] The two contacts 1, 2 are brought into engagement with one another by relative movement in a direction substantially normal to the contacting surfaces, and in response to the consequent thrust one of the contacts is rotated about an axis parallel to the direction of thrust, whereby a grinding action between the contacting surfaces is produced. In the construction shown, the contact is mounted on its support 3 by means of a compression spring 4 urging the contact away from the support, the spring being insulated by blocks 9, 10 from the disc-shaped base 6 of the contact and the disc-shaped extremity 7 of the support 3. The electrical connection between the contact and the support is effected by means of a number of flexible copper leads 11 which are connected near the peripheries of the discs 6, 7 and follow a skewed or helical path around the common axis of the discs. The outward movement of the contact is limited by a guiding and retaining member 5 in the form of a tube with a turned over end 8, the tube being screwed on to the disc 7.
