Abstract

766,558. Spray burners. DOWTY FUEL SYSTEMS, Ltd., and SIMMONS, H. C. April 14, 1955 [Jan. 15, 1954], No. 1279/54. Class 75(1) In a liquid fuel atomizing nozzle comprising a circular swirl chamber 14 having tangential fuel inlet passages 16 and converging at one end to a circular orifice 17, two spaced flat baffle surfaces extend forwardly from the discharge side of the orifice on opposite sides of the orifice axis so that the spray issuing from the orifice impinges on the surfaces whereby angular divergence of the spray is greatest in planes which extend between the surfaces. The swirl chamber 14 and discharge orifice 17 are formed in a nozzle element 13 which projects forwardly beyond the discharge orifice to terminate in a plane 18 normal to the axis'of the orifice. The two flat baffle surfaces are constituted by the sides of a slot 19 recessed in the forward plane 18 of the element 13. The sides of the slot are tangential to the discharge orifice and the base of the slot is arcuate with the orifice centrally located therein. The sides of the slot may be parallel or inclined to each other at a small angle to provide a spray which is wider at one end of its axis of elongation than at the other. The nozzle element 13 is fixed in a central opening, 15 in the forward end of. a cylindrical housing 4 and is spigoted on to a hollow neck 11 on a collar 8 spigoted on to a head piece 6. A cylindrical projection 10 on the head piece 6 enters the neck 11 with clearance to form an annular spill orifice 12 from the swirl chamber 14. A plurality. of nozzles may be mounted in the annular combustion chamber of a gas turbine engine and if the flat baffle surfaces of the nozzles are parallel the nozzles are' arranged so that the elongation axes of the spray beams are tangential to the combustion chamber walls and if the flat baffle surfaces are inclined the nozzles are arranged with the wider parts of their spray beams towards the outer wall of the combustion chamber.
