Class 39(3) An air' heater comprises an electric heating element disposed within' an open ended tubular member which is located within and spaced from the wall of an outer casing having openings at each end for the admission and escape of air, the tubular member forming a flue for air to pass through the heater and thence be ceflected through the escape opening by a deflector mounted within the casing above the tubular member. As shown the heater comprises a cylindrical outer casing 10 with a perforated base plate 13 'and upper and lower air outlet and inlet grids 24, 25, and a rectangular cross-section inner tube 16, the lower insulating end 18 of which carries electric heating elements 15 in the form of resistance coils wound on rods or tubes of refractory material. The lower end of the part 18 is perforated at 20 and encloses a thermostat 31 and supports an indicating lamp 32. At the top of the casing 10 a deflector 23 is arranged beneath a cap 22 carrying a handle 35. Air passing up the tube 16 is heated, while cool air passes up the space 21 formed between the tube 16 and the casing 10. In a modification, the tube 16 comprises a single refractory cylindrical tube with support legs at its lower end. Feet 12 on the base plate 13 ensure that if the heater is knocked over, the plate 13 is higher than the openings 24 whereby air flow through the heater is reversed and the thermostat 31, which is normally responsive to incoming cool air, becomes influenced by hot air passing through the heater and therefore operates to de-energize the heating elements.
